TSVG static var generators (SVG/STATCOM) 10–35 kV, 1–120 Mvar, including grid-forming versions
TSVG belongs to the high-voltage static var generators (SVG, or STATCOM) of the 6–35 kV range with a power of 1–120 Mvar. They are installed to maintain power quality in grids, at wind and solar plants, and at metallurgical and mining enterprises. According to the manufacturer, total worldwide deliveries of TSVG exceed 22 Gvar.

Description
The basis of an SVG is a voltage source converter on power semiconductor switches, connected to the grid through a reactor or transformer. By regulating the amplitude and phase of the output voltage, the converter supplies or absorbs reactive current and smoothly changes reactive power from rated inductive to rated capacitive. Compared with compensators on capacitors and reactors, the response is fast, and the output depends weakly on the grid voltage. The unit stays in operation within an input voltage range of 0.2–1.3 p.u. and supports the grid during voltage dips and overvoltages.
The standard versions are designed for 10 kV and 1–15 Mvar and for 33 and 35 kV and 8–120 Mvar, at a grid frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. Average losses are 0.8%. The unit operates continuously with an overload of 1.1 and withstands 1.2 of rated for 1 min. Control modes include constant reactive power, constant voltage, constant power factor, load compensation and integrated grid reactive power control. The control circuit supply is 380/400/415 V AC or 220 V DC. Protections act against overcurrent and overvoltage, phase loss, driver faults, damage to power elements, loss of pulses, false operation, overheating of the valve hall and power supply failures. The degree of protection is IP55, or IP65 on request, and relative humidity is up to 95% non-condensing.
TSVG adapt well to environmental conditions and grid parameters, including weak grids with a large share of renewables. Availability in operation exceeds 99%. An ordinary SVG gives no inertial response, so the manufacturer offers grid-forming SVG/STATCOM, which increase the stability of grids with a high share of inverter-based generation. The TSVG line has recently been updated.
At wind and solar plants the units maintain voltage and power factor in line with grid code requirements. At metallurgical and mining enterprises they compensate reactive power and suppress voltage fluctuations and flicker. Other installation sites include traction substations and distribution networks. The DC link uses the manufacturer's own DKMJ series film capacitors.

Questions and answers
What voltage and power are TSVG units made for?
The 10 kV versions have 1–15 Mvar, and the 33 and 35 kV versions 8–120 Mvar. The grid frequency is 50 or 60 Hz.
Does an SVG work during voltage dips?
Yes, the unit stays in operation within an input voltage range of 0.2–1.3 p.u. and supports the grid during dips and overvoltages.
What does a grid-forming SVG offer?
A grid-forming SVG/STATCOM provides the inertial response that ordinary SVGs lack. This increases the stability of grids with a high share of inverter-based generation.
