Three-phase HV capacitors 1–12 kV, 25–500 kVAr with internal fuses

Three-phase high voltage capacitors with three terminals for 1–12 kV and a unit rating of 25–500 kVAr. They are connected directly to a three-phase network for reactive power compensation and in harmonic filters. The documentation recommends them for networks up to 11 kV.

Description

A capacitor with three terminals is connected directly to a three-phase network, so it is suitable for individual compensation of high voltage motors and transformers. Compact fixed banks are built from such units connected in parallel. The documentation states networks up to 11 kV, although the rated voltages of the range reach 12 kV.

The case is stainless steel, with three porcelain bushings, a polypropylene film dielectric and a biodegradable impregnant, free of PCB. The phases are connected inside the capacitor in star. Internal fuses and discharge resistors are fitted as standard, with a residual voltage of 75 V after 10 minutes. An external pressure relay with a potential-free NO+NC contact for signalling internal faults is supplied on request. Mounting is horizontal or vertical on side brackets, protection degree IP00, indoors and outdoors.

Rated voltage is from 1 to 12 kV, unit rating from 25 to 500 kVAr, frequency 50/60 Hz, capacitance tolerance −5/+10 %. Insulation levels are 20/60, 38/75, 38/95, 50/125 and 70/170 kV. Dielectric losses are 0.07 W/kVAr, total 0.15 W/kVAr including resistors and fuses. Permissible overvoltages are 110 % Un up to 12 hours per day, 115 % for 30 minutes, 120 % for 5 minutes, 130 % for 1 minute. Current overload is 1.3 In, inrush current limit up to 100 In.

Tests between terminals are carried out at 4.3 Un DC or 2.15 Un AC for 10 s, and between terminals and the tank to IEC. Temperature category is −25/50 °C, natural ventilation, humidity up to 95 %, altitude up to 1000 m, service life over 100 000 hours. Standards are IEC/EN 60871-1 and 60871-4.

They are used for compensation of 3–11 kV motors and transformers, in fixed and automatic banks of 5–6.6 kV (standard 5/6.6 kV banks are built from three-phase units), at desalination and water treatment plants, and in mining and other industry. Examples are a 6.6 kV / 242 kVAr bank for a mining company in Tallinn and 2 three-phase capacitors in an automatic bank at the Oropesa desalination plant (Spain).
