Synchronous condensers up to ±330 000 kvar for transmission networks, renewable plants and industry
Synchronous condensers are rotating machines with reactive power up to ±330 000 kvar that, once synchronized with the grid, smoothly supply or absorb reactive power. They add inertia and short-circuit power to the power system and hold voltage on long transmission lines, in networks with a large share of wind and solar plants and at industrial enterprises.

Description
After run-up and synchronization with the grid, the condenser operates without any switching in the power circuit. By adjusting excitation, the machine is shifted from supplying reactive power to absorbing it, and the voltage at the connected equipment stays within permissible limits. Such machines are installed where voltage must be held at remote nodes, in particular along long transmission lines operating at no load or light load.
Wind and solar plants supply little reactive power and have limited short-circuit power. As their share grows, frequency fluctuates more strongly and relay protection performs worse. The condenser raises the short-circuit power and inertia of the system, corrects the power factor, stabilizes voltage and reduces transients. The manufacturer supplies such machines for generation systems, transmission networks, wind farms, solar plants and energy storage systems, as well as for industrial networks with low short-circuit power and an unstable operating regime.
The machines are built with 4, 6, 8 or 10 poles, with brushless or static excitation and, if needed, a flywheel. The condenser is run up to synchronous speed by a pony motor or a static frequency converter (SFC). Mounting arrangements are IM1001 or IM1005 (B3), IM7311 (D5) and IM7315 (D6). Cooling is self-ventilated or through an air-to-water or air-to-air heat exchanger, with ingress protection from IP23/IP24W to IP44/IP56.
The manufacturer takes on the whole compensation system. Delivery may include starting, control, protection and excitation systems, main and auxiliary transformers, a cooling system, a lubrication system and shaft jacking, a generator circuit breaker (GCB) or a switchgear cubicle, a current-limiting reactor or an isolation transformer, medium-voltage switchgear, AC and DC panels and a battery. The company's engineers carry out calculations and simulation, electrical installation, adjustment and start-up.
The condensers are built to IEC, NEMA, IEEE or ABNT standards. Testing is done to NBR 5383, IEC 60034, NEMA MG 1 or API in laboratories with a test capacity of up to 20 000 kVA and voltage of up to 15 000 V. Every machine undergoes acceptance tests, while type and special tests are carried out at the customer's request. The quality system is certified by Bureau Veritas to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. After start-up the manufacturer's service team provides diagnostics, commissioning and round-the-clock standby.

Questions and answers
What power ratings do the synchronous condensers have?
The reactive power range reaches ±330 000 kvar. The machines are built with 4, 6, 8 or 10 poles and brushless or static excitation.
How does the condenser reach synchronous speed?
Run-up is performed by a pony motor or a static frequency converter (SFC). After synchronization with the grid, the machine smoothly supplies or absorbs reactive power.
To which standards are the condensers tested?
Testing is done to NBR 5383, IEC 60034, NEMA MG 1 or API in laboratories up to 20 000 kVA and 15 000 V. Every machine undergoes acceptance tests, while type and special tests are carried out on request.
