Description

A synchronous condenser works as a synchronous machine without a mechanical load on the shaft. By changing the excitation current, it supplies reactive power to the grid or absorbs it, and the rotating mass of the rotor adds inertia to the power system. Condensers are installed in grids with a high share of wind and solar generation, where they support voltage, control reactive power and improve power system stability. The second area of use is converter substations of DC lines, where the condenser supports the voltage on the converter busbars.

The 50 Mvar high-voltage machine is connected directly to a 35 kV grid. Without an intermediate transformer, according to the manufacturer, operating efficiency grows and life-cycle costs fall. The substation scheme becomes simpler, because it has no separate transformer with its own protection and maintenance. Cooling is air-water, although the manufacturer's page also mentions a fully air-cooled version, so the cooling type is clarified when ordering.

The condenser has millisecond response, high performance in transient and steady-state modes, and overload capability. Fast response is needed during voltage dips, when the machine must immediately supply reactive power to the grid. The cooling system and the simple design make installation, operation and maintenance easier. The manufacturer produces distributed condensers as a separate line alongside grid machines.

The full range of outputs and voltages is not given in the available materials. Parameters for a specific substation, wind farm or solar plant are determined on request, based on the required reactive power, the voltage class of the grid and the connection scheme. For a request, data on the connection point, the short-circuit power of the grid and the required reactive power range are needed.
