Silcovar H is a medium-voltage static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) rated ±2.6…±300 MVAr for voltages up to 40 kV. It provides shunt dynamic compensation for voltage control in networks, correction of power factor and harmonics, and flicker suppression. It is installed in transmission and distribution networks, at wind and solar plants, and in steel shops with arc furnaces.

Description
In a network a fast shunt compensator noticeably increases transfer capacity. Voltage control at intermediate points limits voltage swings, prevents voltage collapse, raises transient stability limits and damps power oscillations. In an electric steel shop Silcovar H balances the load during melting, increases the active power delivered to the furnace and reduces flicker to a minimum.
The compensator is built as a modular multilevel converter (MMC) from standard power modules, IGBT H-bridges, in a voltage source converter (VSC) scheme. Cascaded connection of modules, interleaved PWM and staircase modulation give a near-sinusoidal waveform with very low harmonics even at a low switching frequency. Switching losses are lower, no AC-side filters are needed, and efficiency is high. Modularity simplifies maintenance, availability reaches 99.5 %, and the footprint is small.
The compensator is connected to the network directly, without a transformer, or through a transformer, in star or delta configuration. In delta it can form the grid (grid forming) together with an energy storage system. The reactive power range is from ±2.6 to ±300 MVAr, larger values are engineered individually, and the maximum voltage is 40 kV. The water-cooled SVRH range for 6, 6.6, 10 and 13.8 kV covers ratings from 5.8 MVAr (SVRH 5K8 W60) to 30.1 MVAr (SVRH 30K1 W13), and parameters for 13.8–35 kV are given on request. Air-cooled versions are made for 6–11 kV.
The installation is indoor, at temperatures from +5 to +40 °C, with degree of protection IP42. The compensator is supplied in cabinets or in a container, and an option for a class 4C environment is available. In the water-cooled version deionized water circulates in a closed loop with a water/water or water/air heat exchanger, and the pumps are redundant. Installation altitude above 2000 m and temperature above 50 °C are agreed with the factory separately.
