Silcovar C — static thyristor compensator (SVC) 2–330 MVAr, 1–35 kV
Silcovar C is a static thyristor reactive power compensator (SVC) rated 2–250 MVAr according to the manufacturer's website and up to 330 MVAr according to the brochure, for 1–35 kV. It reduces disturbances caused by voltage fluctuations in transmission lines and industrial distribution networks. It is most often installed near electric arc furnaces and rolling mills.

Description
Voltage fluctuations in the network are caused by short circuits in lines, nonlinear elements such as thyristor converters, and rapidly changing active and reactive loads. The best-known industrial sources of such disturbances are arc furnaces and rolling mills. The compensator operates during normal network operation and suppresses these fluctuations at the load node. Flicker from an arc furnace shows up as lighting flicker at neighbouring consumers, so network companies limit it at the plant's point of connection.
At a metallurgical plant, the SVC shortens downtime and costly restarts, raises productivity, reduces heat losses and extends the service life of the arc furnace. In transmission and distribution networks, compensators increase line capacity and compensate disturbances from renewable sources, which is why they are installed at the connection nodes of wind and solar plants.
The manufacturer's page gives the power range as 2–250 MVAr, while the Power Quality brochure gives an upper limit of 330 MVAr; larger ratings are made as custom solutions. The voltage is 1–35 kV, and installations above 35 kV are designed separately. The basis is well-proven thyristor technology. In the classic SVC scheme, thyristors control the current of the reactors, while higher harmonic filters simultaneously supply capacitive power. Each installation is calculated for the parameters of the specific network and load, from operating modes and higher harmonic filters to coordination with the plant control system.
The manufacturer has worked for more than 40 years with end users, network operators and energy companies on the stability of transmission and distribution networks and has installed more than 10 GVAr of compensation equipment in more than 80 projects worldwide. The quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015. The Silcovar line also includes the STATCOM units Silcovar H and Silcovar D and the compact IGBT-based compensator Silcovar T.
Applications include electric steel plants with arc furnaces, rolling mills, mining enterprises, transmission and distribution network substations and connection nodes of wind and solar plants. For preliminary selection, the following are needed: the voltage at the connection node, the short-circuit power of the network, the type and profile of the load, and the flicker and harmonics requirements.

Questions and answers
What power and voltage range does Silcovar C have?
The manufacturer's website gives 2–250 MVAr, and the Power Quality brochure gives up to 330 MVAr; larger ratings are made individually. The voltage is 1–35 kV, and higher classes are designed separately.
What loads is Silcovar C used for?
The compensator is installed near electric arc furnaces and rolling mills, at mining enterprises and at network substations. It also compensates disturbances from wind and solar plants at their connection nodes.
What is taken into account when designing the installation?
The installation is calculated for the specific network and load, including operating modes, higher harmonic filters and coordination with the plant control system. For voltages above 35 kV an individual design is made.
