PCS-9578 controlled shunt reactor (CSR) for EHV lines
The PCS-9578 is a controlled shunt reactor (CSR) for long extra-high-voltage lines with step regulation of reactive power. It compensates the line charging power in light-load regimes and does not limit transfer at heavy load. The response is fast and maintenance costs are low.

Description
The CSR is based on a transformer with high leakage reactance and power thyristors. The device limits overvoltages, compensates reactive power, and regulates and stabilizes voltage. It also suppresses the secondary arc current, increases the success rate of single-phase auto-reclosing, increases the transfer capacity of the line and improves power flow distribution. Such reactors are already in operation in power systems. The manufacturer distinguishes two types of devices, the multi-step CSR and the CSR with magnetic biasing, and this page describes mainly the multi-step version.
The main part of the installation is a step-down transformer with a leakage reactance above 90 %. Its primary winding is connected to the network in parallel. The transformer moves regulation to low voltage and protects the controlled part from network influences. The controlled part consists of additional air-core reactors connected in series in the secondary winding circuit and combined switches. Air-core reactors have a stable linear characteristic and absorb reactive power. The switch combines a bypass circuit breaker and a thyristor valve in parallel with it.
During a step change, the breakers and valves operate in a set sequence. The valve opens for the duration of commutation, after which the current transfers to the breaker. In series with each breaker there is an energy-pickup reactor that supplies the thyristor control units, so voltage is present on the valves even with the breaker closed. The consumed power is divided into several equal steps, and the control system switches one or several steps at a time. The thyristors have phase synchronization and fast turn-on, so the harmonic content during regulation is very small. The valve is compact and light, takes up little space and is easy to install and maintain.
On the line, a grounding reactor is connected in the neutral of the primary winding. Together with correct CSR control it compensates the capacitive component of the arc current in single-phase faults, so the probability of successful single-phase auto-reclosing grows. The control and protection system has an operator workstation and a LAN. It provides remote control, monitoring and alarming, and protects the transformer, reactors and valves. The CSR coordinates its operation with other reactors of this type, with other compensation devices at the substation, with the automatic voltage regulation system and with stability automation, which widens the regulation range.
The version with magnetic biasing uses the nonlinear characteristic of the core. The network winding is connected in parallel, and the control current is supplied by a thyristor rectifier bridge from an excitation transformer. Pulses to the thyristors are transmitted by optical fiber, and the high-current valve is cooled by forced air from fans.

Questions and answers
What principle is the PCS-9578 based on?
On a transformer with a leakage reactance above 90 % and step-switched air-core reactors in the secondary circuit. Switching is done by breakers with parallel thyristor valves.
For which lines is the CSR intended?
Primarily for long extra-high-voltage lines. There the charging power must be compensated at light loads without limiting transfer at heavy loads.
How does the CSR help single-phase auto-reclosing?
The grounding reactor in the neutral together with CSR control compensates the capacitive arc current. The probability of successful single-phase auto-reclosing grows as a result.
