PCS-9570 fixed series capacitor (FSC) installations for power transmission lines
The PCS-9570 is a packaged fixed series capacitor (FSC) installation for overhead lines, primarily long ones, with references at 220 kV and 750 kV. A capacitor bank connected in series with the line compensates its inductive reactance and increases the transmitted power. The margin of static and dynamic stability grows, and losses decrease.

Description
The bank shortens the electrical distance between substations. Because of this, power flows can be redistributed between parallel lines and generating capacity can be loaded more fully at minimum generation cost. The insulated platform is designed for seismic resistance per IEEE 693.
The installation consists of a capacitor bank, a nonlinear metal-oxide varistor surge limiter (MOV), a spark gap, a damping circuit, a bypass breaker, an insulated platform and electronic instrument transformers. The MOV limits the voltage across the bank to the protective level, usually 2.0–2.5 p.u. The gap operates in less than 1 ms from the command to full breakdown and protects the MOV from overheating when it absorbs excess energy. The damping circuit of reactors and a linear resistor with a spark gap, or a nonlinear resistor, limits the discharge current of the bank during bypassing. The bypass breaker closes more slowly than the gap but extinguishes its arc, and its closing time is usually 30–50 ms. It is used for operational switching and for taking the installation out for maintenance.
The manufacturer built the control and protection system on its own experience in AC network protection. The signals of the electronic transformers are processed digitally directly on the platform, so the problem of interference is removed. A control model based on IEC 61850 inserts and bypasses the banks in sequence in automatic mode. The protections of the capacitors, MOV, gap and platform are redundant, as is the control of the gap. The switching control device combines monitoring and control of the breakers.
The operator can insert and bypass the banks manually or in sequence, with operational interlocks. The installation interacts with line protection and with subsynchronous resonance protection devices, and has an HMI, time synchronization, fault recording and remote sequential control. A substation with such a series compensation installation can be operated without permanent staff.
The company supplies series compensation for 220 kV and 750 kV lines. In 2016 it received an order from Hydro-Québec for the modernization of three 735 kV installations at the Chibougamau substation in Canada. In Mozambique, together with a local partner, it delivered three FSC installations on a turnkey basis, which were put into commercial operation in 2015. The transfer capacity of the corridor afterwards grew by about 30 % without loss of stability margin.

Questions and answers
For which voltage classes have the PCS-9570 installations been supplied?
For 220 kV and 750 kV lines. The modernization of three 735 kV installations at the Chibougamau substation for Hydro-Québec is also under way.
How is the capacitor bank protected against overvoltages?
A metal-oxide MOV holds the voltage at a level of usually 2.0–2.5 p.u. The spark gap operates in less than 1 ms and saves the MOV from overheating.
Can a series compensation installation be operated without on-duty staff?
Yes, the IEC 61850 control system provides automatic sequential insertion of the banks, fault recording and remote control. This allows operation without permanent staff.
