Description
Voltage sags are caused by lightning strikes, grid disturbances and the switching-on of powerful shock loads, and they cannot be avoided. Controllers, variable-frequency drives and digital equipment fail or stop because of them. Production lines and motors stop in turn, and plants with precision processing lines suffer serious economic losses. The manufacturer developed the PCS-9564A specifically to deal with this problem.
The DVR is connected between the grid and the sensitive load. While the grid voltage is normal, it stays in bypass mode. When the voltage drops for a short time, the switches change over quickly and the inverter unit starts operating, while the supercapacitor storage supplies energy to the load for the duration of the sag. The sag is detected from the voltage change within 500 µs, the voltage returns to the normal range within 2 ms, and the total time from the start of the sag to the end of compensation is less than 3 ms.
The PCS-9564A consists of three cabinets. The power cabinet is the main one: it holds universal converter modules built on power semiconductor devices, a filter and an isolation transformer. The required converter power is reached by a flexible series-parallel connection of modules. The control and starting cabinet contains the control unit, auxiliary circuits, and the bypass and mechanical switches. The control supply is duplicated from two sources, so the failure of one of them does not take the DVR out of service. The supercapacitor cabinet houses a storage bank of series-parallel connected modules, its management system, and the charging and discharging circuits.
Several bypasses are provided for a fault in the DVR itself: an electronic switch (1 ms), the inverter zero level (1 ms), a fast mechanical switch (3 ms) and a mechanical switch (60 ms). None of these bypass methods affects the normal supply of consumers. The bypass and mechanical switches act as backup protection of the whole system. If the DVR fails, they close quickly and the load does not lose power.
The system is modular and made of standard units that are easy to service and replace, and the required power is reached by connecting modules in series and in parallel. The device spends long periods on standby, so the intelligent self-test function regularly checks whether the inverter unit is healthy. In this way a fault is found before a real sag occurs.

Questions and answers
How fast does the PCS-9564A compensate a voltage sag?
The sag is detected within 500 µs and the voltage is restored within 2 ms. The total compensation time is less than 3 ms.
What happens if the DVR itself fails?
A bypass operates through the electronic switch in 1 ms, the inverter zero level in 1 ms, the fast mechanical switch in 3 ms or the mechanical switch in 60 ms. The load stays energized.
How is the required power of the installation reached?
By connecting standard converter modules and supercapacitor modules in series and in parallel. The installation consists of three cabinets.
