PCS-8200 unified power flow controller (UPFC) on modular multilevel converters
The PCS-8200 is a unified power flow controller (UPFC), a third-generation FACTS device, on modular multilevel converters (MMC) for 220 kV and 500 kV networks. In steady state it controls the active and reactive power flows of lines and increases the transfer capacity of the network. In transient regimes it quickly compensates reactive power and supports voltage at the connection point.

Description
Among FACTS devices the UPFC is the most versatile. It combines a static synchronous compensator and a static series compensator with a common DC link. The shunt converter holds the busbar voltage and supplies active power to the series one, while the series converter injects into the line, through a series transformer, a voltage with controllable phase and magnitude. In this way the voltage, impedance and angle of the line are regulated, which improves voltage and angle stability and damps power oscillations.
The manufacturer was the first in the world to implement a UPFC on MMC and supplies a complete set of equipment, from system studies to commissioning. The first such controller was put into operation in December 2016 in the 220 kV network of Nanjing, and then the company carried out a 500 kV UPFC project in Suzhou. The main equipment of the PCS-8200 consists of the control and protection system, the thyristor bypass switch TBS and the IGBT-based MMC converters.
The control and protection system is built on embedded hardware and software with a distributed architecture. It implements the UPFC, SSSC and STATCOM modes and transitions between them. Soft start and stop solve the problem of charging the series converter, and the series transformer is inserted without switching off the line. For double-circuit lines with several converters there is a separate control strategy, and the protection covers the whole installation without dead zones.
The TBS is installed at the terminals of the valve winding of the series transformer in parallel with a mechanical bypass breaker. If the converter is damaged, the switch quickly bypasses it, the line continues to operate, and the converter is protected from network short-circuit currents. The powerful TBS thyristor valves withstand short-term high currents without paralleling of thyristors and without water cooling. Cooling is natural, with a horizontal three-phase arrangement.
The MMC valves have a compact vertical tower design, low stray inductance of the power modules and digital drivers. During start-up the modules are supplied from extra-low voltage, and the voltage between them is balanced actively. The power modules are removable, the boards in them are plug-in, and the connectors are standard, so faults are easy to find and remove. The valve base controller monitors the electrical and non-electrical parameters of the modules with microsecond accuracy and transmits data to the HMI over IEC 61850.

Questions and answers
At which voltage classes is the PCS-8200 already in operation?
The first UPFC on MMC was put into operation in 2016 in the 220 kV network of Nanjing. After that a 500 kV UPFC project was carried out.
Which operating modes does the controller support?
The UPFC, static series compensator SSSC and STATCOM modes, as well as transitions between them. Start and stop are smooth, and the line is not switched off for this.
How is the converter protected from network short-circuit currents?
The thyristor bypass switch TBS on the valve winding of the series transformer quickly bypasses the converter if it is damaged. The TBS valves have natural cooling.
