MVCELL are automatic medium-voltage reactive power compensation units in the form of complete metal-enclosed cells. Each stage is rated for voltage up to 24 kV and output up to 4 Mvar, and larger outputs are built up with parallel stages. A single-stage version compensates an individual load, for example a large motor, while a multi-stage version serves the network of a plant with many loads.

Description
The incoming cell contains a cable entry, a load-break switch, including with earthing blades, a mechanical interlock, measuring transformers, surge arresters and a control cabinet. Each compensation stage has HRC fuses, a switching device (contactor or circuit breaker), a series reactor and a capacitor bank of three-phase capacitors or banks. The reactor is either a damping one, limiting the inrush current, or an anti-resonance one tuned to 189 Hz. The supply is brought in by cable from below. The standard cell has degree of protection IP30, up to IP55 to order. The cells are supplied as compact ready-made platforms, so they are installed quickly and connected to the network.
Short-circuit withstand reaches 50 kA for 3 s. The rated parameters, BIL and harmonic level are selected for the specific project. Options include an unbalance CT for the double star scheme, rapid discharge devices, ventilation, blown-fuse signalling, capacitive insulators with voltage indication, an infrared inspection window, heating with a hygrostat, lighting and a smoke detector.
The diagnostic system monitors minimum and maximum voltage (ANSI 27/59), cabinet overheating, undercompensation and high THDi. Bank unbalance is monitored by neutral voltage (59N) or by current between the neutrals of the double star (46N). Overload protection (49RMS) and overcurrent protection (50/51), pressure sensors in the capacitors and a fire alarm are provided. Current protection is implemented with one relay with three current transformers, and YY unbalance protection with one relay with one CT. The smoke detector and the overheating alarm in the incoming cell are connected to the site fire protection system. The units operate indoors and outdoors at altitudes up to 4500 m, including in 20-foot containers.
The manufacturer makes automatic units up to 24 kV and fixed units up to 33 kV. Completed projects include two automatic 3.5 Mvar units at 11 kV in IP55 containers for the Petronas plant in Malaysia, each with three capacitor banks with blocking reactors. Both units can work in master/slave mode so that compensation is not interrupted in case of a fault on the supply lines. The containers were shipped by sea without wooden packaging and placed directly on the foundation. For the Al Khobar 2 desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, two automatic systems of 2800 kvar each at 13.8 kV, 60 Hz were supplied. At a LafargeHolcim group cement plant, semi-automatic 5.5 kV units compensate powerful crusher motors.
