HVDC converter stations (VSC-MMC and LCC), DC back-to-back links and SVC

HVDC converter stations with VSC-MMC and LCC technology, back-to-back (BTB) DC links, frequency converters for interconnecting 50 and 60 Hz networks, and static var compensators (SVC). The company has developed HVDC systems since the 1950s and, by its own data, took part in all HVDC projects in Japan.

Description

In Japan the company is, by its own data, the largest supplier of HVDC equipment. The country's power system works at two frequencies, 50 and 60 Hz, so frequency converters (FC) and DC links between power systems are needed there all the time. The company's range covers converter stations, FC, DC back-to-back links and SVC.

The company was the first in Japan to apply VSC voltage converters based on the modular multilevel converter (MMC). Such installations are compact and give flexible network control. The technology is used in the new Hokkaido–Honshu DC link of 300 MW, ±250 kV, 1 200 A. In 2026 the company received an order for a VSC system to upgrade pole 1 of this link.

Line-commutated LCC converters are used for long-distance transmission of large power. The company has carried out many LCC projects in Japan and abroad, including links between 50 and 60 Hz networks. For the MONITA ±500 kV line connecting the power systems of Montenegro and Italy (operator Terna), suspended thyristor valves were developed.

A BTB DC link connects asynchronous networks without mutual influence. Power flow is regulated quickly, and short-circuit currents in the networks it links do not increase. An example is the Minami-Fukumitsu link, in operation since 1993.

Static var compensators (SVC) control reactive power, damp oscillations and maintain voltage stability, including with uneven renewable generation. The company's equipment is used on interconnectors and submarine cable lines, to link asynchronous power systems and to stabilize voltage at nodes with a large share of solar and wind plants.

Questions and answers

What HVDC technologies does the company offer?

VSC voltage converters based on MMC and line-commutated LCC converters, as well as BTB DC links and frequency converters for interconnecting 50 and 60 Hz networks.

What are the parameters of the Hokkaido–Honshu VSC-MMC link?

The new link is rated for 300 MW, ±250 kV DC and 1 200 A. In 2026 the company received an order for a VSC system to upgrade pole 1.

What is a BTB DC link used for?

To connect asynchronous networks without mutual influence, with fast power flow control and without an increase in short-circuit currents. The Minami-Fukumitsu link has been in operation since 1993.
