Description
A reactor is connected in series with the capacitors of each step, and the circuit is tuned to a frequency between the fundamental frequency of the network and the lowest harmonic present, usually the 5th. By specification the filter is protective detuned, with a tuning frequency below the 5th harmonic. For harmonics the bank presents an inductive impedance, so higher harmonic currents do not overload the capacitors and are diverted to the network. Harmonic amplification and resonance are ruled out, and the service life of the capacitors increases.
The bank is fully customised for the project, and the manufacturer carries out the design and calculation of the most suitable variant for each site. The step rating is from 50 kVAr, the total rating as required by the customer, the maximum insulation voltage 36 kV. The design can be a metal cabinet with a protection degree up to IP54 or an open rack IP00, for indoor and outdoor installation. Iron-core reactors are used for indoor banks and air-core (coreless) ones for outdoor and rack banks.
Protection is provided by APR fuses with a trip indicator or by an electronic relay with a circuit breaker. Switching is done by vacuum or SF6 contactors or SF6 circuit breakers depending on the network voltage. Single-phase or three-phase capacitors with internal fuses are used, the choice also depending on the network voltage. The control cabinet contains a reactive power controller, alarms and controls. The controller switches steps on and off depending on the load, and the alarm reports operation of the protection. The bank consists of several steps, each with its own reactor, capacitors, protection and switching. The indicator on the APR fuse shows which step has tripped.
An example of supply is two high voltage banks with a total rating of 2000 kVAr with detuned filters for the GALP oil refining complex in Sines (Portugal, 2017). Commissioning was carried out by the manufacturer's own staff.
The banks are used in petrochemicals and oil refining, metallurgy, at plants with powerful frequency converters and rectifiers, and at 6–35 kV substations with non-sinusoidal load. They are installed indoors or outdoors depending on the enclosure and the type of reactors, and the parameters are selected according to the harmonic content of the load.

Questions and answers
Why does the bank have series reactors?
A reactor together with the capacitor tunes the circuit to a frequency between the fundamental frequency of the network and the lowest harmonic, usually the 5th. This rules out resonance and harmonic amplification.
What rating and insulation voltage do these banks have?
The step rating is from 50 kVAr, the total rating is selected for the project. The maximum insulation voltage is 36 kV.
What enclosure protection degrees are available?
A metal cabinet with a protection degree up to IP54 or an open rack IP00. The bank can be installed indoors and outdoors.
