Fixed HV capacitor banks 7.2–36 kV, 50–4800 kVAr
Fixed high-voltage capacitor banks with power from 50 to 4800 kVAr and insulation levels of 7.2–36 kV. They provide constant reactive power compensation, primarily of the magnetising current of power transformers. They are used at 6–35 kV substations, industrial plants and water utilities.

Description
Fixed (non-regulated) high-voltage capacitor banks provide constant reactive power compensation, primarily of the magnetising current of power transformers and of loads with steady consumption. The bank is designed and built for a specific site: the mechanical and electrical parts, the protection and the accessories are agreed with the customer. A bank without a controller is switched in as a whole and works at constant power, so it suits cases where reactive power consumption is steady.
Power ranges from 50 to 4800 kVAr, other powers are made to order, and insulation levels range from 7.2 to 36 kV. The versions differ in the type of enclosure or support structure and in configuration. Two arrangements are provided. The first connects three-phase capacitors in parallel, with an internal star connection and internal fuses; the second uses a double star with isolated neutral on single-phase capacitors. The catalogue gives standard ranges for 5/6.6 kV with three-phase units and for 22 and 33 kV with single-phase ones.
The banks contain capacitors with internal fuses, high breaking capacity fuses (APR/HRC), a neutral unbalance current transformer with a trip relay, and inrush current limiting reactors to limit the inrush on switching and when several banks operate in parallel. Depending on the project, load break switches, contactors or circuit breakers are added. The accessories include ICR inrush limiting reactors and discharge devices. Other powers and configurations are agreed separately. Manufacture complies with IEC/EN 60871-1, -4.
For the 35/10 kV Shyshaky substation (Poltava region, 2019) two fixed 10 kV banks of 400 and 500 kVAr were supplied, compensating a 4 MVA transformer. A 5300 kVAr bank at 10 kV for the 110/35/10 kV substation of Zakarpattiaoblenergo in Rakhiv (2017) replaced a Soviet-made installation, and the project covered design, manufacture and commissioning. There have also been deliveries of 12 kV / 300 kVAr banks (Egypt) and 6.6 kV / 242 kVAr banks (Estonia). Typical sites include 6–35 kV substations, industrial plants, water utilities and mining companies.

Questions and answers
What range of power and insulation levels do fixed HV banks have?
Power is from 50 to 4800 kVAr, other powers are made to order. Insulation levels are from 7.2 to 36 kV.
What capacitor connection arrangements are used in fixed banks?
Parallel connection of three-phase capacitors with an internal star and internal fuses, or a double star with isolated neutral on single-phase capacitors. Standard ranges are made for 5/6.6 kV with three-phase units and for 22 and 33 kV with single-phase ones.
Which standards do the banks comply with and how are they protected?
The banks are made to IEC/EN 60871-1, -4. Protection is provided by APR/HRC fuses and a neutral unbalance current transformer with a trip relay, and inrush currents are limited by reactors.
