Dyna-VAR — dynamic reactive power compensator (STATCOM), 8–24 MVAr
A dynamic reactive power compensator on medium-voltage PWM converters rated 8, 16 or 24 MVAr. It quickly supplies and absorbs reactive power, stabilizes voltage on the plant buses and reduces dips caused by loads with high reactive power consumption. It is installed at metallurgical and mining plants, near arc furnaces and rolling mills.
- Power
- 8 MVAr (1 section), 16 MVAr (2 sections), 24 MVAr (3 sections) at cooling water 40 °C
- Mode

Description
The compensator is built on proven medium-voltage PWM converter technology, and the hardware is common with the manufacturer's drives. Control works in both directions, in leading and lagging modes. Stable voltage lowers the risk of equipment trips due to transients, and therefore of downtime. On the manufacturer's oscillograms, voltage dips on the buses are reduced by more than 50 % after Dyna-VAR is switched on. For a rolling mill or an arc furnace this means a steadier voltage at neighboring consumers and fewer emergency stops.
Power is built up in sections. At a cooling water temperature of 40 °C one section gives 8 MVAr, two give 16 MVAr, three give 24 MVAr. An overload of 150 % is permitted for 60 seconds. An example 16 MVAr configuration consists of two size 9000 converters on water-cooled IEGT assemblies. The reactive current, about 1430 A per converter, is controlled by varying the DC link voltage up to 2 × 2600 V.
The converters are connected through a 12-pulse 16 MVA transformer, 13.8 kV / 3.15 (or 3.8) kV, with taps of ±2 × 2.5 % and a short-circuit voltage of 20 %, which suppresses some of the harmonics. In this example the distribution network is 13.8 kV, 60 Hz. The isolation transformer matches the system to any grid voltage of the customer, and in terms of harmonics it complies with IEEE 519.
Cooling is by water, which increases availability and reduces the risk of contamination. Customer water or an external water-to-air heat exchanger is used. Besides the indoor version, complete outdoor units are available. The system supports a remote connection used for maintenance and diagnostics, viewing real-time trends, live function block diagrams and fault help, and fault data are sent automatically by e-mail. The manufacturer keeps the equipment and application history of each customer to resolve faults faster, and technical support operates around the clock without days off.
Dyna-VAR can be combined with fixed capacitor banks, and then the dynamic part handles only fast load changes. The compensator eliminates charges for reactive power consumption. The applications cover metallurgical and mining plants, arc furnaces and rolling mills, industrial network substations of 6–35 kV and renewable energy facilities.

Questions and answers
What power does the Dyna-VAR compensator have?
One section gives 8 MVAr, two give 16 MVAr, three give 24 MVAr at a cooling water temperature of 40 °C. An overload of 150 % is permitted for 60 s.
What grid voltage can Dyna-VAR be connected to?
Through an isolation transformer, to any grid voltage of the customer. The 16 MVAr example uses a 12-pulse 13.8 kV / 3.15 kV transformer for a 60 Hz network.
Does the compensator meet harmonic requirements?
Yes, the system complies with IEEE 519. The 12-pulse transformer with a 20 % short-circuit voltage suppresses some of the harmonics.
