CTMT three-phase MV capacitors 3.3–11 kV, 100–450 kVAr

CTMT are three-phase medium-voltage power capacitors for 3.3, 4.16 and 11 kV with an output of 100–450 kVAr. The three phases are assembled in a single tank, so the capacitor is installed directly next to a motor or transformer without assembling a bank from single-phase units.

Description

The main task of CTMT is individual reactive power compensation of high-voltage electric motors and transformers. They are also used to reduce losses in distribution networks. A capacitor installed next to a motor removes reactive current from the supply cable, and a unit with three phases in one tank takes up little space. The manufacturer cites very low losses in the capacitor itself, which the company achieves by continuously improving materials and the production cycle at its plant near Bologna.

The 3.3 kV capacitors have insulation level Um 3.6 kV, the 4.16 kV ones Um 7.2 kV, both with BIL 60 kV. The 11 kV version has Um 12 kV and BIL 75 kV. The output series is 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450 kVAr, with a mass from 23 to 76 kg depending on output and on whether internal fuses are fitted. Versions with and without internal fuses differ in case height. The terminals are either all insulated, or one terminal is connected to the case. The standard frequency is 50 Hz; to order, capacitors are made for 60 Hz, with other insulation levels, dimensions and bushings.

With internal fuses, each capacitor element has its own fuse, and breakdown of one element does not take the capacitor out of service. Without them, external current-limiting HRC fuses are fitted, which must withstand inrush currents, and the peak current must not exceed 100 times the rated current. The fuse is rated for a continuous current of 1.3 In, and with the capacitance tolerance of up to 1.15 of nominal the unit current can reach 1.5 of rated. Therefore the manufacturer advises choosing a fuse rated current about twice the rated current of the capacitor.

The capacitors are made to IEC/EN 60871-1 and -4, and the plant holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certificates. Capacitors withdrawn from service are disposed of under local rules, in EU countries under Directives 91/156/EEC and 91/689/EEC. CTMT are installed on 3–11 kV induction motors of pumps, compressors, mills and crushers, and they compensate the no-load current of power transformers. They are also used in small fixed compensation installations at industrial substations.

Questions and answers

What insulation levels do CTMT capacitors have?

The 3.3 and 4.16 kV versions have Um 3.6 and 7.2 kV with BIL 60 kV. The 11 kV version has Um 12 kV and BIL 75 kV.

How to choose an external HRC fuse for CTMT without internal fuses?

The manufacturer recommends a fuse rated current about twice the rated current of the capacitor. The fuse must withstand inrush currents whose peak does not exceed 100 times the rated current.

What loads are CTMT intended for?

For individual compensation of 3–11 kV induction motors of pumps, compressors, mills and crushers, and of the no-load current of power transformers. The output of one capacitor is from 100 to 450 kVAr.
