CMMT single-phase MV capacitors 2.08–13.86 kV, 100–600 kVAr
CMMT are single-phase medium-voltage power capacitors for rated voltages of 2.08–13.86 kV and outputs of 100–600 kVAr, intended for 3–24 kV networks. They are assembled into three-phase capacitor banks for reactive power compensation and into higher-harmonic filters. The capacitors are made to IEC/EN 60871-1 and -4.

Description
CMMT capacitors are made at the manufacturer's plant near Bologna. The manufacturer cites very low losses, which it achieves by continuously improving materials and the production cycle. Banks built from CMMT raise the power factor and reduce network losses; these capacitors are also used in harmonic filters and in overvoltage protection circuits. A single-phase unit with one or two insulated bushings is easily combined with neighbouring units in star or double star, so a bank is built up to the required output from identical capacitors.
The rated voltage range has four steps. The 2.08 kV capacitor has an insulation level Um of 3.6 kV, the 4.16 kV unit Um 7.2 kV, the 6.93 kV unit Um 12 kV, and the 13.86 kV unit Um 24 kV. The impulse withstand level (BIL) is 75/95 kV, and 125 kV for the 24 kV class. The output of one unit is selected from the series 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 550 and 600 kVAr, with a mass of 26 to 98 kg. Large sizes, from 450 kVAr, have double brackets on each side. Both terminals can be insulated, or one terminal is connected to the case.
Protection is arranged in one of two ways. In the internally fused version every capacitor element has a series fuse, so a damaged element is disconnected while the capacitor stays in service. This option is applicable at Un ≤ 7.2 kV and output ≥ 300 kVAr. Capacitors without internal fuses are protected by external HRC or expulsion fuses. In high-power banks, unbalance protection between the neutrals of the double star is added, with a 24 kV current transformer and an unbalance relay. When elements break down in one branch, the branch capacitances diverge, a current appears between the neutrals, and the relay gives an alarm or trips the bank.
The standard frequency is 50 Hz. To order, the manufacturer makes capacitors for 60 Hz, with other insulation levels, dimensions and bushings; the manufacturer does not treat dimensions in catalogues as final. CMMT are installed in static capacitor banks of 6–20 kV substations, and they compensate large motors and transformers. Another field covers filter-compensation units of industrial plants, the oil and gas sector, and the cement and mining industries.
