BMT MV capacitor banks up to 24 kV and above, up to 14.4 Mvar
BMT are medium-voltage capacitor banks for reactive power compensation at industrial plants and substations. They are assembled from CMMT single-phase capacitors; standard versions have an output of up to 14.4 Mvar, and multi-tier frames take the operating voltage beyond 24 kV.

Description
CMMT single-phase capacitors are connected together to the required output. The typical arrangement is a double star with an isolated neutral and unbalance protection; a delta connection is also possible. The modular design allows both small and large banks to be built for different insulation levels. If elements break down in one branch of the star, the branch capacitances diverge, a current flows between the neutrals, and the unbalance relay gives an alarm or trips the bank.
The standard supply includes capacitors, a frame, support insulators, connecting busbars, unbalance protection with a current transformer and relay, and damping (current-limiting) reactors. If required, rapid discharge devices, harmonic blocking reactors or filter reactors, earthing switches and line disconnectors are added. HRC fuses are used indoors, expulsion fuses outdoors. Current and voltage transformers with overload and short-circuit protection relays, electromechanical interlocks and personnel enclosures are also possible, and for the cabinet version heat exchangers, ventilation and heating elements. The scope may also include a voltage presence indicator with a kilovoltmeter and an electromechanical interlock with a control panel.
The most widely used standard versions have an open IP00 frame with damping reactors and an unbalance CT, with expulsion fuses, or with both elements at once. The cabinet version has a degree of protection up to IP54, for outputs up to 14.4 Mvar at 24 kV. The typical series consists of 3600 kvar on 6 capacitors, 7200 kvar on 12, 10 800 kvar on 18 and 14 400 kvar on 24, with an overall length from 2020 to 4840 mm. To specific customer requirements the manufacturer also assembles non-standard banks.
The banks are made for indoor and outdoor installation, on a pole with a metal bracket or on the floor with a metal enclosure. The frames are made of hot-dip galvanized steel, and of stainless steel for corrosive environments. BMT are also made as harmonic filters. The full set of accessories simplifies installation, the compact design eases transport and maintenance, and the banks are designed for severe climatic and operating conditions. The standard is IEC/EN 60871-1 and -4. The banks operate at 6–35 kV substations of industrial plants and network companies, in oil and gas complexes, metallurgy, and the cement and mining industries.

Questions and answers
What output do standard BMT banks have?
The typical series consists of 3600, 7200, 10 800 and 14 400 kvar on 6, 12, 18 and 24 capacitors. Overall length is from 2020 to 4840 mm.
Can a BMT bank be supplied for voltage above 24 kV?
Yes, operating voltages above 24 kV are obtained on multi-tier frames. The manufacturer offers the IP54 cabinet version for outputs up to 14.4 Mvar at 24 kV.
What fuses are used in BMT banks?
HRC fuses are fitted indoors and expulsion fuses outdoors. Unbalance protection is provided by a current transformer and an unbalance relay.
