Description
KSTAR GEL gel batteries are made at 12 V in a capacity range of 38–2000 Ah. The electrolyte is thickened into a gel, so the case is sealed and spillage is impossible even when tilted. Gas recombination inside the cell rules out topping up with water, and over its service life the battery remains maintenance-free.
The main figures of the series concern operating conditions. The battery works at temperatures from −40 to +65 °C, so it can be installed both in unheated cabinets and containers and in hot technical rooms. The design service life under float charging reaches 20 years, although in practice it depends on temperature: the warmer the room, the faster the plate ages.
Self-discharge is low. A charged battery can be stored for six months without recharging and not lose its charge. For installers this is convenient: installation and commissioning do not have to coincide with delivery, and the warehouse does not need regular recharging every month.
KSTAR names three main areas of application. The first is stand-alone and hybrid solar plants, where the battery goes through a charge-discharge cycle every day. The second is energy storage systems of small and medium capacity. The third is backup power for UPS systems and telecommunication nodes, where the battery stands idle for a long time in float charge and has to perform in an emergency. The manufacturer describes the series as a cost-effective option for these tasks. Charging is carried out with a voltage limit according to a profile for gel batteries, because excessive voltage harms the gel and shortens the life of the block. In solar systems the charge controller is set up for this battery type, and temperature compensation is enabled if the blocks stand in a room with large temperature swings. Before commissioning, the voltage of each block is measured and the blocks are equalized if the spread is noticeable.
For selection, determine the system voltage, that is, the number of series-connected 12 V blocks, the capacity for the required discharge time and the minimum room temperature. Installation and connection are carried out according to the instructions; before commissioning, the voltage of each block is checked. The final selection is best agreed with a manager.
