Description

KSTAR Deep Cycle is a series of lead-acid batteries designed for cyclic operation with deep discharge. The capacity is 38–2000 Ah and the nominal voltage is 2 or 12 V. KSTAR recommends them first of all for solar installations, where the battery charges during the day and delivers energy in the evening and at night.

The difference between the two versions matters for a project. The 2 V cells are rated for a service life of 15 years, the 12 V monoblocks for 10 years. For large capacity banks, therefore, 2 V cells are usually taken and connected in series to the required voltage, and a single defective cell is replaced without dismantling the whole assembly. The 12 V monoblocks are simpler to install and suit small stand-alone systems.

The operating temperature range is −20…+50 °C. At the upper limit the service life falls, so the batteries are better placed in a ventilated room or a temperature-controlled enclosure, and the charge temperature sensor should be connected to the controller. Charging follows a mode suited to cyclic use, not float use.

The construction is similar to other sealed lead-acid KSTAR series. The battery is protected against the consequences of possible electrolyte leakage by a patented tray under the case, so the room and the equipment around stay clean. Cyclic loading differs from float: the battery regularly gives up a significant part of its capacity, so depth of discharge affects service life. The smaller the discharge per cycle, the longer the battery lasts, and capacity is taken with a margin. Undercharging leads to sulfation of the plates, so the charge controller must regularly bring the battery to full charge. In banks of many series-connected blocks, the voltage equalization of individual cells is monitored.

For selection, start from daily consumption, the permissible depth of discharge, the number of days of autonomy and the DC bus voltage of the inverter or hybrid system. The block connection scheme, cable cross-sections and protection are designed according to the manufacturer documentation. For 2 V banks it is convenient to allow a capacity margin for ageing, that is, to calculate capacity taking into account its decline at the end of service life. The final specification is best agreed with a manager.
