Description

A pad-mounted transformer is installed on a concrete base outdoors, without an enclosed substation. It is a three-phase oil-filled distribution transformer in cabinet design. It is used in distribution networks, at commercial and industrial sites, in solar and wind power plants, in energy storage systems and to power EV charging stations, including the manufacturer's own charging complexes that meet NEVI programme requirements.

The power range according to the manufacturer's brochure is 250–5 000 kVA, while its website states 750–5 000 kVA. High voltage is from 2400 V to 34.5 kV, low voltage from 208Y/120 V to 4.16 kV. Windings are copper–copper or aluminium–aluminium. The insulating liquid is mineral oil, natural ester FR3 (biodegradable, non-toxic, with a higher flash point) or synthetic ester. Cooling is natural, with a temperature rise of 65 °C, 55/65 °C or 65/75 °C.

The high voltage bushings are plug-in 200/600 A insulators. They give a safe front face with no exposed live parts (dead front), so the cabinet can be installed without a fence and serviced under standard safety precautions.

The transformers are manufactured and tested in-house on a full production cycle, from tank fabrication and coil winding to electrical assembly and factory tests to ANSI/IEEE standards. The tank, coils, electrical assembly and factory tests are carried out at one enterprise, so one manufacturer controls the whole cycle. According to the manufacturer's brochure, comprehensive tests are performed to ANSI C57.12 and cover electrical checks, load losses, impedance and leakage tests, while routine tests are performed to ANSI C57.90. The manufacturer notes that such transformers are prepared for charging stations and energy storage systems, where the load varies. For each project the power rating, the combination of high and low voltages, the winding material, the liquid type and the temperature rise class are agreed, and the manufacturer works with the customer on electrical and environmental requirements. The products are designed for industrial, commercial and utility facilities as well as for powering charging stations.

Questions and answers

What power and voltage range do these pad-mounted transformers have?

According to the brochure the power is 250–5 000 kVA, while the manufacturer's website gives 750–5 000 kVA. High voltage is from 2400 V to 34.5 kV, low voltage from 208Y/120 V to 4.16 kV.

Which insulating liquid and temperature rise are possible?

Mineral oil, natural ester FR3 or synthetic ester. With natural cooling the temperature rise is 65 °C, 55/65 °C or 65/75 °C.

Can a pad-mounted transformer be considered as a replacement for a TMG transformer in a KTP substation?

The selection is made by purpose and main parameters, in particular the power of 250–5 000 kVA and high voltage up to 34.5 kV. The final choice is agreed with a manager.
