Description
Cardinal pumps are produced by the company and supplied together with its transformer oil coolers. There are two main types, centrifugal and with an axial impeller. The pumps are designed for extreme temperatures, long service life and minimal maintenance, and on request they are made to the dimensions and characteristics of existing pumps, including for railway cars. In forced oil circulation circuits, heat removal from the transformer windings depends on the pump, so service life and tightness are decisive here.
The casing is split. The pump and motor housings, impellers and volutes are cast from class 30 cast iron. The impellers are designed so that after the pump stops the oil can circulate by thermosiphon, naturally. The sleeve bearings have a large thrust surface, the journals and thrust surfaces of the shafts are ground between centers, and the shafts, impellers and motor rotors are dynamically balanced. Grinding gives alignment and a clean surface, and balancing extends operation without vibration.
Bearings are offered in three types: standard, Harley and Harley with the TecSonics wear monitoring system. TecSonics serves as a predictive maintenance tool and shows the condition of the pump bearings in the user's application.
The pump operates continuously at pumped medium temperatures from −40 to +100 °C. Oil-immersed high-efficiency motors are made for 50 and 60 Hz, for one or two voltages, single-phase or three-phase, with special insulation for cooling liquids other than transformer oil. The outside of the pump is protected by an anti-corrosion coating, and on request the internal surfaces of the casing are coated as well. Inspection plugs allow the direction of rotation to be checked after installation on the transformer.
Each pump-motor unit is pressure tested at 50 psig. The windings are tested for 60 seconds at twice the working voltage plus 1000 V, winding resistance is measured before and after assembly, and insulation is checked with a megohmmeter. On request a run-in is performed and certified performance data are issued. The pumps are installed in the cooling systems of ODAF, OFAF and OFWF transformers at substations and power plants, replace old pumps during upgrades, and are supplied with Cardinal fittings.
