Micro substation 72.5–550 kV with direct HV/LV transformation (SSVT)
Micro substation is a compact substation that obtains low voltage of 100–900 V directly from a 72.5–550 kV overhead line in a single transformation step. It is based on a station service voltage transformer (SSVT). The single-phase version delivers up to 333 kVA, the three-phase version up to 1 MVA.

Description
According to the IEA, about 770 million people in the world have no access to electricity, and many of them live in remote areas over which high-voltage lines already pass. Building a conventional HV/MV substation with a distribution network there for a small load is uneconomical. The micro substation is connected to the existing overhead line with minimal construction work, and the power transmission mode of the line does not change as a result.
The SSVT (station service voltage transformer) steps the voltage from 72.5–550 kV straight down to 100–900 V. For safe operation a high-voltage circuit breaker and disconnectors are included. A current transformer on the HV side measures the current of the micro substation, and the protection selectively determines that a fault has occurred in it. Surge arresters are installed if necessary. The protection system is built to the customer's standards.
The single-phase version delivers up to 333 kVA on the LV side, which is enough for lighting, communications, refrigeration equipment, 5G towers and auxiliary supply. The three-phase version with three SSVTs delivers up to 1 MVA and can be expanded by adding transformers, for example for electric vehicle charging stations near motorways. For such a station a 145 kV, 500 kVA micro substation was developed and approved by the Portuguese system operator REN (pilot in Pontinha). Another example is a 145 kV AIS version with a circuit breaker and a 167 kVA SSVT.
The micro substation is supplied pre-assembled. It is transportable and quickly installed on a skid, steel structures or a foundation depending on the site. A completely SF6-free version based on the Blue portfolio with vacuum switching and clean-air insulation is possible and is suitable for temperatures of −50 °C and below. The manufacturer's experience in high-voltage vacuum switching exceeds 10 years. According to the manufacturer, such equipment produces no harmful emissions and is not inferior to conventional equipment in technical and economic terms.
The micro substation can be purchased or obtained under a service model. Applications include electrification of remote settlements and industrial facilities, charging infrastructure along highways, and auxiliary supply of facilities along overhead line routes.

Questions and answers
From what overhead line voltage can the micro substation be supplied?
The SSVT is connected to a 72.5–550 kV overhead line and steps the voltage straight down to 100–900 V. The power transmission mode of the line does not change.
What power does the micro substation deliver?
The single-phase version delivers up to 333 kVA, the three-phase version with three SSVTs up to 1 MVA. Power is expanded by adding transformers.
Is there an SF6-free version of the micro substation?
Yes, based on the Blue portfolio with vacuum switching and clean-air insulation. This version is suitable for temperatures of −50 °C and below.
