E-House — prefabricated modular substations with switchgear up to 45 kV

E-House is a prefabricated modular substation building for low- and medium-voltage distribution equipment up to 45 kV. The modules are built, fitted out and wired inside at the factory, and arrive at the site with all the equipment. The design service life of the building is about 50 years.

Description

E-House houses low- and medium-voltage power distribution equipment for outdoor installation and in other harsh conditions where sensitive systems need protection. The scale of the facility can be anything. Modules of different sizes are combined into large complexes, and the largest deliveries have exceeded 400 m². The building is part of the manufacturer's modular substation concept, which also covers the civil part with concrete foundations and steel structures, commissioning and grid connection.

Depending on the project, the modules house low- and medium-voltage switchgear up to 45 kV, auxiliary systems, and control, protection and communication equipment. The switchgear can be air-insulated, gas-insulated or a combination of the two. At shipment the E-House already contains everything needed, from the switchgear to fire and security alarm systems, lighting and heating. Optionally available are electric vehicle charging stations, a solar roof, and other colors and materials of the exterior cladding.

Factory assembly allows work at the factory and at the site to proceed in parallel. While the modules are fitted out and tested, the foundations are prepared on site, so the overall project time is shortened and there are fewer overlapping stages. Safety also increases, because personnel spend less time working near machinery and live equipment. Assembly and testing use the plant in Vaasa (Finland) with an area of 13,000 m² and a factory acceptance test (FAT) hall of 1400 m², opened in 2024. Factory acceptance tests are completed before shipment, so only connections and commissioning remain at the site.

The manufacturer is among the largest turnkey substation suppliers in the Nordic countries, works with networks up to 400 kV and holds the status of a class A substation supplier for the Finnish system operator Fingrid. This status applies to substations of the national grid of Finland. Completed projects include the connection of the Bodmyran and Nordanberg wind farms of the grid company Ellevio in Sweden and a substation for an enterprise producing battery chemicals.

To size an E-House, the following are needed: a single-line diagram, a list of LV and MV equipment, the climate conditions of the site and the requirements for auxiliary systems. The dimensions of the modules, their number and the composition of the auxiliary equipment depend on these data.
